Life on Skye is wild, remote, beautiful, and deeply rooted in community — but we know it can also be challenging, especially when it comes to attracting and keeping the people our services and communities need.
We’re a small and passionate community based team working alongside NHS Highland, Scottish Ambulance Service, Highland Council, and local partners to help with recruitment, retention and to do our best to share what it's like living and working here.
What We’re Here For
Our focus is on people — connecting, supporting, and sharing what’s possible:
Helping people find jobs and opportunities on Skye.
Supporting new recruits as they consider applying for roles and as they settle into island life.
Showcasing the best of Skye — its culture, its communities and key workers who live and work here every day.
Making sure Skye is recognised not just for its landscapes but for the sense of belonging it offers.
Our Vision
We’re here to help recruitment processes feel more creative and flexible
Our work is rooted in three big ideas:
Belonging – Helping new staff and families feel supported and connected.
Community – Strengthening relationships between residents, employers, and recruits.
Future-thinking – Finding creative solutions to Skye’s unique challenges.
A Look Back at the Past Year
It’s been a busy, inspiring twelve months since we first launched Work on Skye. Here are some highlights:
Website Engagement
3,302 total site sessions and 2,349 unique visitors on workonskye.com.
A 20% increase in traffic over the last two months alone, driven by social activity and organic searches.
Over 2,200 sessions came directly from Facebook, with hundreds more from trusted partners and search engines — showing real collaboration in action.
Social Media Growth
200+ posts shared across the year, building a connected and active online presence.
Our content has reached 316,912 people and generated 163,235 views.
2,090 interactions and 4,210 direct link clicks — proving our posts drive real action.
337 new followers joined us this year, reflecting growing awareness and interest in what we do.
Partnerships & Community Impact
We’ve worked closely with colleauges at NHS Highland, Scottish Ambulance Service, NES, and local groups and organisations to create joined-up, people-first solutions.
Our case study on welcoming a new nurse to Portree Hospital showed how community collaboration can overcome barriers like housing shortages and make a real difference.
Looking Ahead
The next year feels full of possibility. Subject to continued funding support we’ll be focusing on:
More resources to make relocation easier and clearer for new recruits.
Events and workshops connecting employers, recruits, and the community.
Storytelling that celebrates Skye — its people, its culture, and its opportunities.
Creative housing and retention solutions, shaped by community voices.
A schools outreach program
A monthly e-newsletter to share opportunities and learning events.
